RIDER ACHIEVEMENTS 2017
We had a quiet start to the year with the first Durham & Teesside Team being one that went to the Hadrian’s Challenge which was held at the Cumbria Challenge Saturday ride. Thank you to Sarah Wilkinson for getting a team together to represent Durham & Teesside Group. The team consisted of 3 riders doing a 40km Competitive ride, these were, Christine Hogarth, Lisa Johnson and Nicky Pink. Our 25km pleasure rider was Susan Caruthers.
We came 3rd in the competition and were only beaten by teams that had 64kn riders.
Many thanks to everyone involved and for supporting the group.
All Groups donate prizes for this event. Everyone gets a prize and a rosette.
This year National EGB ran a Novice Championship Ride. Riders had to qualify for the ride. The Group had a number of riders do just that. These included, Christine Hogarth, Catherine Grant, Nicola Lewis, Olivia Morris, Clare Anderson and Alex Wake.
The Championship ride was held at the Red Dragon ride in Wales over a distance of 48km.
Five riders went down to the ride, and 5 riders successfully completed it. Many congratulations to Christine, Catherine, Nicola, Olivia and Alex. Just to add a little spice, (or pressure) to the event, Alex did it as a sponsored ride for Hope 4 Kidz supported by Amber’s Law. It was in memory of Charlotte Tasker and Amber Rose Cliff. I do not know the final figure but understand that over £700.00 was raised.
A number of Durham & Teesside members joined the 4 For The North competition organised by Northumberland & Tyneside Group. Well done and congratulations to Christine Hogarth who won the Novice section in the competition.
National Leader Board.
Many congratulations to Clare Anderson and Christine Hogarth who both made it onto the National Leader Board for the top 50 Novice riders.
Congratulations also to Olivia Morris who came 8th on the National Leader Board for Junior Rider.
National Competitive Distance Rosette/Trophy Award 1,600km Painted Lady ridden by Karen Fairbairn.
National EGB have produced a promotional video. It was shown at the recent National Annual Meeting and should be available to view on You tube and Facebook. One of Durham & Teesside members are included on the video. Many congratulations to Alex Wake for your contribution.
Although not a rider achievement, we have a Group Achievement. For a number of months, the Durham Valleys Ride was the top National ride in the country with the best online feedback. By the end of the ride season, Durham Valleys had dropped to 4th place. As ride organiser of the ride and Chair of the Group I am delighted with this. I am even more delighted that the top National ride in the country with the best online feedback is New Marske. Very well done to Ian Savage for organising this ride and thank you to everyone who helped. PS Durham & Teesside ran 2 National rides. In total there were 87 National rides.
Just before we move on to our annual awards, I would like to tell you about a rider achievement which I thought was special, I told the Durham & Teesside committee, and the committee agreed with me. In March this year a rider completed their very first endurance ride, a 5km lead rein route at Tanfield. In May I saw this rider at the Jolly Moors ride where they completed a 16km pleasure ride. The lead rein was gone. In June this rider completed a 30km pleasure ride at Dialstone. This rider had been an associate member but on 1st July became a full member. The very next day at New Marske, they completed their very first 32km Competitive ride achieving a Grade 2. In August they completed a 30km Competitive ride at Hexham achieving a Grade 1 and in September completed a 32km Competitive ride at the Cumbria Challenge again achieving a Grade 1. They qualified for the Novice Championships. On 30th September this rider completed a 48km Competitive ride as part of the Novice Championships held at the Red Dragon in Wales. This rider has gone from a 5km lead rein ride to a 48km Competitive ride from March to the end of September, (7 months). For any rider to do this, it would be a fantastic achievement. The rider I am describing is 10 years old.
Durham & Teesside Group think this is an amazing achievement. I therefore have great pleasure to present this Achievement Award on behalf of the Group.
Very, very, very well done to Olivia Morris and her pony Summers Harmony.
